What We Do
Old Clayburn Design is a residential design and drafting studio based in Abbotsford, serving clients across British Columbia. We specialize in custom homes, residential multiplexes, additions, renovations, and accessory buildings.
Our projects also include ALR properties, heritage and historic buildings, and tenant improvements.
Philosophy
Good design doesn’t erase history - it learns from it and builds on it.
Every project begins with place. Old Clayburn Design looks for the story embedded in a site - it’s history, character, and context - and works with clients to thoughtfully add to that story. We enjoy blending old and new, creating designs that meet our clients’ practical needs while remaining respectful to the neighbourhood character.
About Tyler Friesen
Tyler is the owner and principal designer of Old Clayburn Design. He graduated from BCIT’s Architectural and Building Engineering Technology program in 2008 and has since worked on over 150 residential projects, including custom homes, townhomes, and master-planned condo developments.
Tyler blends a respect for neighbourhood character with practical expertise in codes and bylaws. He uses both hand-drafting methods and the latest 3D Building Information Modelling to ensure creativity is never limited by tools or software.
Tyler and his wife, Laura, along with their four children, reside in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
History & Branding
While we work across British Columbia, our studio is proudly based in Abbotsford.
Our branding is inspired by local history: the name honours the historic Clayburn Village, and the signature rusty red featured on our logos, website, and business cards is drawn from the iconic “Clayburn Red” brick that shaped many of Abbotsford’s early buildings. This colour reflects a meaningful connection to the people and industry that built our community.
